Sustainable Tourism Project
Tourism has the potential to negatively impact the environment, but it also generates economic growth and jobs.
Tourism in the Bay of Plenty is committed to a sustainable future. To ensure that the region’s best loved natural spots are preserved for visitors for years to come, a Sustainable Tourism Project is underway. The Bay of Plenty Sustainable Tourism Charter was put together in late 2006 and implemented in early 2007. The Sustainable Tourism Project aims to reduce environmental and social impacts while remaining economically viable.
Our Commitment
Papamoa Beach Top 10 Holiday Resort has been on board from the beginning as one of the pilot businesses. One of the long-term goals of the project is to ensure that sustainable tourism becomes a mandatory part of all tourism businesses culture - while the Sustainable Tourism project is a three-year programme, sustainable tourism is a lifelong mission.
Here at Papamoa Beach Holiday Resort we have undergone an extensive assessment process where every aspect of the Resort has been looked at by a sustainability assessor to improve the business in alignment with the Charter principles. From the assessment, a report on current sustainability performance was prepared with over 140 ‘opportunities for improvement’ presented to us.
What we Already Do . . .
As a business, we were already achieving a number of things such as; recycling paper, glass, cans and plastic; sand dune care and sponsorship of local charities. Since the implementation of the project, we have achieved much, much more! Reduced office waste, implemented a worm farm, installed water restrictors, replaced all bottled/packaged guest supplies with dispenser systems, replaced electric hand dryers with paper towel dispensers, replaced plastic bin liners with biodegradable bin liners; just to name a few!
To ensure that our mission is understood by all people invested in the Resort, our company mission statement is a prominent feature in our day-to-day decision making;
“To be acknowledged as the leading provider of beachfront accommodation by giving our guests the best holiday experience possible, incorporating our commitment to a sustainable future in aiming to reduce our environmental and social impacts while remaining economically viable”
Here’s a few small things you can do to help . . .
So! Here’s how your day-to-day decision making can help us achieve our sustainable goal & even better –take some of these tips & use them at home!
- Please use our recycling stations provided. There are receptacles for Paper/Cardboard, Glass & Plastic.
- Please ensure that all lights and appliances not in use are turned off where possible. Don’t forget to check the light outside your unit door is off!
- Don’t Litter. Always put your rubbish in one of the many bins provided around the Resort.
- Make sure you use walkways that are provided to the beach –never trample on our precious sand dunes.
- Slip Slop Slap with sunscreen & ALWAYS swim between the flags. Be aware of rips. Like any beach, care must be taken when swimming, surfing or fishing.
- Don’t leave rubbish on the beach –leave only footprints, take only pictures.
- Be Fire-wise! Never light open fires on the beach or in the Resort. Fireworks are also an extreme hazard.
- Try to hang your washing out on one of our many washing lines dotted around the Resort rather than use dryers. If you do use one of our economical gas dryers, please ensure the lint screen is clean prior to use for maximum efficiency.
- Dump no waste in our storm-water drains –these are drained directly into the ocean & are for storm-water/rain only!
- We have worms to feed –if you wish to supply us with any of your organic waste to feed the worms, please ask our reception staff. Please ensure that there are no plastics or spicy/flavoured meats included in your organic matter.
- Boaties –Don’t forget to be water-wise with life jackets & always tell someone where you are going. We have a handy fish-filleting table & boat/car wash in the Resort –please check your site map for the location.
The Management & Staff of Papamoa Beach Top 10 Holiday Resort sincerely thank you for being an active part of our sustainable mission. It’s everyones responsibility.
