- Here at Papamoa Beach Top 10 Holiday Resort we have implemented a small worm farm for staff waste and a small amount of paper waste. We use the vermcast from this to fertilise growth of our plant cuttings for further Resort landscaping. We have recently purchased another worm farm this year as we had too much waste for our orginal bin.
- We have cut down the use of Round Up in the Resort grounds by purchasing a mechanical edger to keep the road edges tidy. Tried product called 'Hitman" but was not effective.
- We have just re-vamped our website (Aug/Sept 2010) & subsequently altered our sustainability page to reflect current projects and plans.
- Recycling areas around Papamoa Beach Top 10 Holiday Resort are now displayed on the Resort map visually.
- We have formed a 'Sustainable Tourism Committee' . This committee is made up of all Team Leaders as well as a staff member from each department. Monthly meetings take place, the committee works from our Papamoa Beach Top 10 Action Plan.
- We have a Facebook & Twitter page now. We use this medium to connect to our guests about what's happening here at the Resort, special deals or local events & any sustainable initiative we are currently working on.
- We are looking into collecting Spiniflex seeds from the plants out the front of the Resort & growing our own plants that we can plant in our dunes.
- We try to buy products that have little packaging or has a scheme that we can return their packaging back to the supplier.
- Worn bath towels cut into squares of 6, over locked & used as cleaning rags.
- When we replace any of the Units bedspreads we try to see if we can re-use these in other Units or as Linen Hire.
- Monthly Team Leader meetings take place, sustainability is a discussion point at thesemeetings. A great eduction tool for Team Leaders to discuss anything happening at the moment in the Resort referring to the Project & pass this onto their direct staff.
- The 22" TV's from the Villas have been recycled and are now used in the Holiday units & Cabins, flat screens installed in the Villas.
- We use 100% recycled toilet tissue & paer towels.
- Used magazines are recycled through the Staff room & Library. We also have a Book Exchange policy in the Library.
- Although we have not yet got a formal lighting plan in place, we are mindful of this when installing new lights. We started using energy efficient light bulbs last year (2009). We still have some to use but have come to the conclusion that the bulbs are not efficient enough for our Resort & our bulb usage. We have recently changed back to using our orginal low wattage bulbs.
- Upgraded to sensor lighting in Blue & Green Blocks as well as the Spa Building. red Block on timers - off between midnight & 5am.
- We purchase energy efficient appliances for all our Units & Amenity Blocks.
- Close off some showers in periods of low occupancy - saves on lighting, cleaning, gas & water usage.
- Skylights have been installed in Green Block showers to utilise natural light.
- Purchased second hand scooter for Grounds staff to use around the Resort instead of Ute.
- Papamoa Beach Top 10 Holiday resort monitors the usage of Power & Gaswithin the Resort as well as our recycling & rubbish. This is monitored through the Communigator program that has just been developed.
- Have replaced 12Ltr wate restrictors with 9Ltr restrictors in Blue & Green Blocks as well as Villa 15 & 18 - we will continue to replace these as renovations arise.
- Showers timers in Blue & Green Block showers. The shower runs for 5 minutes, the hot water is programmed not to restart for 3 minutes after the 5 minute shower ends.
- Dual flush toilets installed in Units & in most of the Amenity Blocks.
- Replaced 4 urinals in Blue Block with waterless urinals.
- Papamoa bEach Top 10 Holiday Resort works in with Coast Care in re-planting our dunes in front of the Resort. We palnted 400 plants September 2009 & again in September 2010 have just planted 300 plants. The plants are donated by Coast Care BOP. We have sign's erected down on the dunes supporting dune care growth.
- We are constantly monitoring & refilling the sand under the ladder steps that lead down to the beach from Papamoa Beach Top 10 Holiday Resort.
- We actively support our local community by sponsorship & participation in events.
